A woman in silhouette raises a fist in triumph

Thank you to everyone who entered the Cinnamon Pencil mentoring competition. We had a fantastic postbag, with some really strong writing and a large field so narrowing it down has been hard.

The prose that impressed us as being full of potential was imaginative but beautifully controlled, with really strong sense of narrative drive. There was a particular fine crop of poetry with superb images and a willingness to take risks with language and form.

The winner of a year's mentoring is Patricia Helen Wooldridge who will be working on a poetry collection, Daughter. This was a superb application with poetry of great suppleness and poignancy, so we're excited to be working with Patricia.

Awarding the two bursary places was particularly difficult as we had some extremely strong contenders, amongst both prose and poetry writers. In the end, we narrowed down to Diane Woodward, working on a collection of short stories, and Pnina Shinebourne, working on a poetry collection, Exposure. Diane's writing is full of energy and humanity and Pnina's poetry is tightly written and inventive.

With such a strong field, we decided to extend the offer of bursary places to writers whose work convinced us that they would greatly benefit from the sustained and intense feedback of mentoring. So, congratulations to prose writers:

and to poet:

Finally, we also want to mention entries from Julie Irigaray and Penny Shutt, all of which were extremely impressive.
